Love Bites Back focuses on a pivotal period of dyke photography produced by Del LaGrace Volcano, between 1982 and 1995. Developed through Volcano’s early explorations of queer identity, BDSM culture, and embodied politics, the exhibition offers an intimate and confrontational portrait of communities navigating desire, power, and self-representation.
Presenting never-before-seen work from Volcano’s time in Edinburgh, the works trace the development of the artist’s striking visual language during a concentrated moment of experimentation: challenging traditional understandings of gender and sexuality, affirming the erotic and authorial agency of the people that appear in them.
Love Bites Back is the sister exhibition of Sensual / Mutual, showing Volcano’s earlier work from the 1980s at London gallery Auto Italia. Volcano’s photography will also appear on billboards across Edinburgh in August, in partnership with BUILDHOLLYWOOD Scotland.
