Kate Downie: Grasslands

Grasslands is a major exhibition combining drawing, experimental printmaking, painting, and film, inspired by close observation of Scotland’s diverse grassland environments: from the Tay Estuary reed beds to the wind-swept coasts of Shetland. Downie’s practice focuses on the often overlooked, revealing the complexity and resilience of grasses; grass is everywhere, its roots binding the land together. Influenced since youth by Dürer’s Great Piece of Turf, Downie continues to explore new visual languages in search of a way to transcend the familiar and elevate the ordinary into something both intimate and monumental.
